A small business accountant that is right for you

Accountant Search from your small business accountant sydney

For many people looking into commencing a new small business venture one difficult question they must ask themselves is how to find a good accountant that will assist you in starting and operating your new business venture. Often accountants are found through referrals by friends and or business associates or sometimes just via a Google search. We here at mas accountants highly recommend that you not sign up with a new accountant without first sitting down with them and giving them a full brief of the what, how and why of your new small business. Once you have had that discussion you can then evaluate the accountant based on their responses and whether or not they meet your needs. We would also recommend considering the following pointers when looking for a new accountants or changing accountants from your existing one.

1. Only go with an accountant that is qualified. This means that they are a member of either the IPA, CPA or CA bodies in Australia. Also ask for their tax agents number and check with the ATO to make sure they are legally registered to carry out tax agent services in Australia.

2. What size business does your accountant operate. A one man band operating a home based accounting firm is not likely to able to cope with satisfying the requirements of a complex business structure turning over sales in the millions. Likewise, a large accounting firm based in the CBD may not be able to offer the personal service a small micro-business requires in the start up phase.

3. Look for an accountant that specialises in your industry/location or business size. It is likely that they will be able to pass on the wisdom and experience gleaned from seeing other clients go through the same processes as you are about to experience.

4. The ability to communicate openly with your accountant is critical to a good, strong working relationship. If you aren't able to speak to your accountant about anything concerning you then you won't be getting the best advice as we can only advise you based on what we know about you.

5. Accessibility to your accountant when you need them is another vital factor. This may be as simple as being able to pick up the phone and speak to your accountant without needing to make an appointment and having someone answer their emails on a frequent and regular basis. Location is not necessarily a critical option in the modern age, but accessibility and communication is.

As a small business accountant I trust that these key pointers will assist any prospective small business owners in making a choice when chaning accountants that will see a strong relationship develop and grow as your business grows.
