The explosion in smart phones and tablet usage has been one of the modern technological phenomena of the past few years. The way these devices have changed our daily lives has been so significant that Facebook is now accessed by more people on smart phones than on “normal” computers. Any small business owner that hasn't jumped on board is missing out on some valuable resources and tools that I guarantee will make your business life easier. For iPhone users, here are just a few apps that we have found to be more than useful for the average business owner.

1.       Camera

Whilst the humble camera is a standard app, having a camera in your pocket has so many advantages, from taking copies of documents, taking photos of job sites to the recording of tax receipts for safekeeping. All of these can then be emailed or saved to cloud based storage or even straight to your accountant. The flash also comes in handy as an emergency torch!

2.       LinkedIn

Connecting with like-minded individuals and business connections is now an essential part of doing business, it’s not what you know but who you know. Being able to connect whilst on the go is also critical. The great new LinkedIn app allows all of this and more.  You can even look up the details of your next business meeting for that extra heads up that may just help seal the deal.

3.       Xero Touch

As Xero accountants we believe Xero is revolutionising the way accountants and businesses connect, share information and communicate. The Xero Touch app takes that to a whole new level. You can look up current bank account balances, contact details and even check debtors right on your iPhone before meeting with your clients. 

4.        Camcard

Like many in the business world, we always end up with piles of business cards with no easy method of storing them in a way that makes them usable for the future. This app allows you to save the business car details straight to your address book and then sync them to your other devices so you always have the contact details at hand.

5.       Vehicle Log

The ATO requirement to keep a logbook for twelve consecutive weeks is a constant bugbear with our clients, yet it is critical to making legitimate claims for vehicle expenses, not an insignificant expense for most business owners. This clever app allows you to make use of your smartphones GPS capabilities to log business related trips without having to keep your logbook with you and remember to find a pen to write down the odometer reading. Once your twelve-week period is complete you can then publish the logbook straight to your accountant! Job done!
